Course Overview

This course has been specifically designed for learners without a background in the Community and Social Services (Client Services) Eldercare industry. This competency unit provides the learners with the knowledge and skills to understand basic human anatomy and movement technologies and support clients in activities of daily living and assist in rehabilitation exercises.

Course Outline

Part 1 Demonstrate understanding of basic human anatomy and movement terminologies

  • Describe the types, characteristics, and functions of different body systems correctly
  • Describe the human anatomy by applying correct body region and directional terms in reference to the anatomical position
  • Demonstrate the different types of movement of joints in limbs and spine correctly for assisting clients in rehabilitation exercises

Part 2 Support clients in activities of daily living (ADL)

  • Check that tools and equipment needed to assist clients in activities of daily living are in accordance with safety guidelines
  • Support client in the use of tools and equipment in accordance with Service Delivery Plan when assisting them in activities of daily living
  • Identify the barriers to clients independence and safety in activities of daily living and highlight the need for improvements in his/her environment
  • Encourage and support or assist client to maintain and promote a safe environment
  • Monitor client during activities of daily living to assess his/her level of ADL dependency based on Modified Barthel Index (MBI)
  • Report change in clients ability to undertake activities of daily living in a timely manner to appropriate personnel according to organisational guidelines
  • Report steps taken to support clients in activities of daily living in accordance with organisational guidelines

Part 3 Assist clients in rehabilitation exercises

  • Participate in planning rehabilitation exercises for client in consultation with appropriate person(s) taking into consideration clients profile and conditions and relevant guidelines, rules, indications, and contraindications of the various exercises
  • Check and ensure tools, equipment, and environment needed to carry out rehabilitation exercises are in accordance with safety guidelines
  • Check and ensure client is in suitable health condition to undertake rehabilitation exercises according to ADL dependency level
  • Instruct client to perform prescribed rehabilitation exercises using correct terminologies and according to guidelines of exercise
  • Monitor and assist client in movements to ensure exercises are performed correctly
  • Provide encouragement and feedback to client on performance to motivate undertaking of exercises
  • Document outcomes of exercises using appropriate terminologies and format in the maintenance rehabilitation form in accordance with organisational guidelines, highlighting when client is not able to undertake rehabilitation exercises

Upon completion of the course, a Statement of Attainment (SOA) from SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) will be issued.

  • Participants must attend at least 75% of the course, complete the exam with a pass or competent result.

  • Workforce Training Support (WTS) funding only applies to a trainee who is 35 years old and above with a monthly income of $2,000 and below.
