(Core) WSQ Assist Clients To Meet Basic Hygiene Needs

Course Overview
This course has been specifically designed for learners without a background in the Community and Social Services (Client Services) Eldercare industry.
The course content and examples are designed to provide entry-level care workers with an overview of the responsibilities providing basic care to the seniors. Learners will be guided through a practice-oriented and experiential learning process to become more aware and experience the true meaning of what it takes to:
- Communicate effectively with senior clients who are facing normal challenges of an aging body
- Assist these senior clients meet their basic hygiene needs and to perform their Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) in a safe and comfortable manner. Such ADLs include eating, mobility and transfer, fall prevention, toileting.

Course Outline
Part 1 Establish rapport and maintain relationship with client
- Greet client warmly and conduct self-introduction appropriately at beginning of meeting
- Build rapport and maintain relationship with client by applying effective communication techniques and interpersonal skills
- Establish concerns of client by applying emphatic response techniques
- Ensure that privacy and confidentiality of client is maintained
- Report any required information in accordance with privacy and confidentiality guidelines
Part 2 Prepare to assist elderly client to meet basic needs
- Identify any potential risk situations to the personal safety of self and the elderly _client
- Assist in managing risk through the use of appropriate methods including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required for assisting client in activities and proper hand-washing to prevent infections
Part 3 Assist elderly client in oral feeding
- Prepare utensils and equipment for feeding activities
- Prepare food for client according to hygiene standards
- Explain clearly and communicate effectively to senior clients about the planned feeding activities
- Assist client into a comfortable position before proceeding with feeding activities
- Assist client in cleaning up self after meal and ensure that client is in a comfortable and upright position for appropriate period of time to aid in digestion
- Report feeding activities and highlight any abnormalities observed in clients condition including feeding difficulties
Part 4 Transfer the elderly client with or without mobility equipment to prevent falls
- Explain clearly and communicate effectively to senior clients about the purpose and process of transfer
- Assess risks and take precautionary measures prior to performing transfer of client to prevent falls taking into consideration the profile and conditions of client
- Carry out proper preparation before carrying out the transfer with appropriate transfer techniques
- Ensure that client is comfortable and unhurt after the transfer and report any abnormalities observed in clients condition
Part 5 Assist the elderly client in toileting
- Carry out proper preparation taking into consideration the senior clients gender and _toileting need before assisting the client in a timely manner
- Assist client to ensure proper positioning
- Assist client in cleansing relevant areas of body in accordance with hygiene standards
- Dispose waste and clean toileting equipment in accordance with safety and _hygiene guidelines
- Record and report amount and nature of body waste and/or any abnormalities observed in clients condition

Funding Information
Skills Development Fund (SDF) and SkillsFuture Funding:
Participants must attend at least 75% of the course, complete the exam with a pass or competent result.
Online applications are not applicable for companies applying funding with Absentee Payroll.
Workforce Training Support (WTS) funding only applies to trainee who is 35 years old and above with a monthly income of $2,000 and below.
For Company Registration:
Customers who are applying funding for trainee(s), please submit Training Grant applications in SkillsConnect website before registration.
Training Grant number is to be submitted together with the registrations.
Payment for the course must be using company cheque or via GIRO.
