Course Outline

The course integrates Listening, Speaking and Reading skills and covers the following:
  1. Express daily and leisure activities
  2. Provide personal information appropriately
  3. Express preference and needs in social and workplace settings
  4. Interpret  advertisements relating to goods and services
  5. Locate and give the direction of places and merchandise
  6. Give instructions appropriately at the workplace
  7. Interpret jobs and job skills
  8. Handle health and nutrition problems that affect work
  9. Handle telephone calls effectively
  10. Interpret signs, notices, charts and diagrams in the workplace

Mode of Assessment

  • All trainees for Workplace Literacy (WPL) are required to sit for a Pre WPLN Assessment to evaluate their language proficiency levels before they are recommended to the different levels for class.
  • The Pre WPLN Assessment is computer-based and consists of four components - Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
  • After the completion of the training, all trainees are required to sit for a Post WPLN Assessment to assess their improvements.

Certification Obtained and Conferred by

Statement of Attainment (SOA) from SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG)

  • Mapped to ES WSQ - Workplace Literacy Conversational (Intermediate)

Course Objectives

This course is for adult learners who need English to

  • handle basic survival needs for very routine social demands;
  • understand simple phrases containing familiar vocabulary, spoken slowly with frequent repetition;
  • interpret simple directions, schedules, signs, maps and menus;
  • fill out forms and write short, simple notes and messages based on familiar situations;
  • handle jobs and/or training that involve basic oral and written instructions and diagrams.


Trainee must have WPLN Assessment results to determine their workplace literacy & numeracy level.

Skills Development Fund (SDF) and SkillsFuture Funding:

  • Participants must attend at least 75% of the course and to complete Post-Training Assessment.
  • Workforce Training Support (WTS) funding only applies to trainee who is 35 years old and above with a monthly income of $2,000 and below.

For Company Registration:

  • Customers who are applying funding for trainee(s), please submit Training Grant applications in SkillsConnect website before registration.
  • Training Grant number is to be submitted together with the registrations.
  • Online applications are not applicable for companies applying funding with Absentee Payroll.
  • Payment for the course must be using company cheque or via GIRO.
