Course Outline

The course integrates Listening, Speaking and Reading skills and covers the following:
  1. Read letters, vowels, consonants, basic sounds in the English alphabet with correct stress and intonation.
  2. Use basic grammar and structures e.g. simple present and past tenses, nouns, verbs, pronouns, prepositions, imperatives
  3. Read text using contextual clues to find main idea and key points
  4. Read days, dates and months, clock times and schedules
  5. Handle basic communication in social and workplace context
  6. Handle basic telephone conversation
  7. Interpret transportation schedules, fares and  traffic information
  8. Ask for and give directions
  9. Interpret health related vocabulary and problems.
  10. Follow, clarify, give or follow feedback to instructions
  11. Interpret advertisements, labels, charts and price tags in selecting goods and services.

Mode of Assessment

  • All trainees for Workplace Literacy (WPL) are required to sit for a Pre WPLN Assessment to evaluate their language proficiency levels before they are recommended to the different levels for class.
  • The Pre WPLN Assessment is computer-based and consist of four components - Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
  • After the completion of the training, all trainees are required to sit for a Post WPLN Assessment to assess their improvements.

Statement of Attainment (SOA) from SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG)

  • Mapped to ES WSQ - Workplace Literacy Conversational (Beginner)

Course Objectives

This course is for adult learners who need English to

  • communicate using basic phrases and sentences to handle some difficult situations in everyday life;
  • read and write letters of the English alphabet and numbers, sight words and simple phrases;
  • write basic personal information on simplified forms;
  • handle routine entry-level jobs that involve only basic oral and written communication in English to do their tasks.

Pre-requisites

Trainee must have WPLN Assessment results to determine their workplace literacy & numeracy level.

Skills Development Fund (SDF) and SkillsFuture Funding:

  • • Participants must attend at least 75% of the course and to complete Post-Training Assessment.
  • Workforce Training Support (WTS) funding only applies to trainee who is 35 years old and above with a monthly income of $2,000 and below.

For Company Registration:

  • Customers who are applying funding for trainee(s), please submit Training Grant applications in SkillsConnect website before registration.
  • Training Grant number is to be submitted together with the registrations.
  • Online applications are not applicable for companies applying funding with Absentee Payroll.
  • Payment for the course must be using company cheque or via GIRO.
